What can we find in the greater area of Avdou?
In Avdou village and other villages nearby you can find small markets where you you can buy food, 'kafenio' -cafes- for a quick snack, greek cofee or raki (Crete's traditional alcohol schnapp). A taverna -restaurant- operates from April to October at the village church yard.

Is there any dining facility at the villas?
A traditional 'taverna' -restaurant- operates on demand at the Villas. Every previous day we show the menu for the next day and you must let us know whether you wish to dine with us and also how many of you are. There are at least two choices of dishes, one of which is always vegetarian. The ingredients are produced in villages all over the area. From May to October, all vegetables are certified organic, grown at our vegetable garden.

The coach stop is only 300 metres from Avdou Villas. During the summer months (April to October) there are four coaches to Heraklion. There is also the municipal coach that runs the route to Hersonissos three times per day and is free of charge. From Hersonissos there is a coach to all major cities and towns of Crete every half hour. During the winter period (November to March) the transport schedule is more limited. You can also book a taxi from Hersonissos to any destination. As an example, fees to Heraklion airport is about 25 euros.

The coach station is very close to the docks. You can also book a taxi from the port to Avdou village. If you are entering from the airport, you can book a taxi or rent a car on-the-spot. We can also arrange for a car for you to pick up, rented at special price, as long as we know the exact date of your arrival and your flight number. If you are at the airport and wish to take the coach to Avdou village, you must travel 2 klm to Coach Station East and from there take the coach to Lasithi.

We feel that all seasons have their special attributes! During spring time the lemon tree flowers blossom with a wonderful scent, the mountains are bustling with wild flowers and herbs, both trademarks of the Cretan countryside. During the summer, our vegetable garden is abundant with organically grown vegetables that we use with our cooking. Avdou is situated in the centre of Crete, so, access to the more tranquil warm sea of the south is easy or the more touristic north with organized beaches and great shopping and entertainment destinations, with the tranquility of Lagada valley -where Avdou is situated- to be there for you when you return. During the cooler months of autumn one can walk about the area and visit byzantine churches or trek in the surrounding mountains. The north beaches are now quieter, so swimming is even better. In the winter, snow-capped mountain peaks around the valley give you the impression that you are somewhere in northern europe -without the extreme low temperatures, though!

Avdou is home to the best organized paragliding site in Crete. There are two take-off sites, a North and a NorthWest to cover about 90% of the wind directions in the area. Landing is over 6,000 metres, by the village, 100 metres away from the villas. A support facility with buffet is near completion at the landing spot. Area climate in Lagada valley is ideal for soaring, thermal and cross-country. You can also arrange for tandem flight -flying together with a qualified instructor. We fly throughout the year, yet every day flying is only from April to November. If you are already a paragliding pilot, we can arrange for you to join a group that will fly in the most suitable site anywhere in Crete for that day.

About 100 metres from the villas there are stables where -if you are a beginner- you can take riding lessons. If you are already somewhat experienced, you can ride to the surrounding hills with an escort from the stables. You can also have 6-day trails -escorted or not- but this applies to experienced riders. Trails are arranged for specific dates, so pre-booking is required.
